SALARY RANGE: $41,223 -- $69,226 depending on experience, plus supplement for
advanced course work. School division pays employee state
retirement and life insurance and 80% of individual health
insurance. Other benefits include sick leave, sick leave bank, and
personal leave.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master’s Degree in School Psychology, or Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, Clinical Counseling, or Child Counseling; supplemented by three (3) to five (5) years responsible experience in psychology, preferably within a similar educational institution; Must possess and maintain School Psychologist certification.
  2. Hold a postgraduate professional license in Virginia with an endorsement in School Psychology.
  3. Have the ability to perform diagnostic evaluations of students, assessing and interpreting intellectual, social and/or emotional development; conduct
  4. consultations; conduct counseling for individual students and small groups; and prepare and maintain files and records.
  5. Have the personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with
  6. students, parents, administrators, and other teachers.

Description: 

The school psychologist provides psychological and diagnostic services in accordance with policies and regulations of the School Board. 


Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Conducts psychological evaluations to assess children’s cognitive, personality, and behavioral functioning and their educational needs and writes comprehensive psychological reports and holds parent conferences to discuss results 

  • Participates in child study team meetings and in eligibility meetings to assist in the determination that a child has a disability and needs special education services. 

  • Consults and collaborates with school administration, instructional staff, and parents regarding the individual behavioral and academic needs of students utilizing functional behavior assessment (FBA). 

  • Assists in the implementation and provides coaching for the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program and provides consultative services using a Response to Intervention (RTI) approach for selected schools 

  • Serves as a member of the school-based clinical team to support students with emotional and behavioral disabilities and provides counseling services for these students 

  • Provides crisis intervention in response to critical incidents using the NASP PREPaRE curriculum, presents the Depression Awareness/Suicide Prevention program to high school students, and assists in conducting threat assessments 

  • Performs other duties and accepts other responsibilities as assigned by the Supervisor or Director 


Qualifications: 

  • Holds or is eligible for the Virginia Pupil Personnel Services License with an endorsement in school psychology 

  • Holds a specialist or doctoral degree in school psychology or a related discipline in child psychology 

  • Has strong oral and written communication abilities and productive time management skills. 

  • Demonstrates leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary to work effectively with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and colleagues. 


Organizational Relationship: 

The school psychologist reports to the Supervisor of Diagnostic and Prevention Services.

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

 

Performs difficult professional work in making diagnostic evaluations of individual pupils, including an assessment and interpretation of the student's intellectual, social, and emotional development; serves as a consultant to school personnel and parents in interpreting problems; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Special Education.

This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

 

Performing diagnostic evaluation of students, assessing and interpreting intellectual, social and/or emotional development; conducting consultations; preparing and maintaining files and records.

 

• Screens referrals by previewing referrals assigned, schedules evaluations, secures records from community agencies, and observes the student;

• Completes individual psychological evaluations including intelligence, achievement, perceptual and projective personality updating;

• Obtains any ancillary evaluations; e.g., hearing, visual, speech, educational and medical;

• Completes a written report to be sent to the schools, including an interpretation of the results of the psychological evaluation;

• Conducts parent/school conferences, including recommendations for the child's school program and/or home environment;

• Acts as liaison with community agencies;

• Serves on Child Study Team;

• Compiles a complete and comprehensive file of information of the referenced child to include data such as the written psychological, referral forms, parent conference report, progress reports, sociological and medical;

• Performs related tasks as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the special education process for diagnostic and evaluative procedures; excellent oral and written communications skills; ability to work with and through other school personnel, parents and community agencies.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Postgraduate Professional Certificate with an endorsement in School Psychology and some experience.
