Terri Sisson Named Virginia School Psychologist of the Year

Terri Sisson of Madison County Public Schools is Virginia’s School Psychologist of the Year. The award was given by the Virginia Academy of School Psychologists (VASP) meeting October 20 in Virginia Beach.

“We couldn’t be any prouder today that Madison’s own psychologist is being hailed across the Commonwealth for exceptional professionalism and commitment to education,” notes Dr. Matthew Eberhardt, the county’s Superintendent of Schools. “Terri’s genuine care and friendliness make her approachable so that our community knows her as open and likeable.  We regard her as a good friend, professional colleague and strong confidant.  Now the state will know that, too.

Madison Primary School Principal Mike Allers reports Sisson “is a true professional, respectful of our purpose and vision in every way.  She has shown that she is aware that every child deserves to be regarded as an individual, and every incident needs to be addressed in the same unique manner.”

Director of Student Services Susan Aylor nominated Sisson for the award.  “Terri consistently puts the needs of the students and staff of Madison County at the forefront of discussions,” Aylor noted.

In giving the award VASP President Eric Mesmer noted that Sisson’s influence on her profession has been both regional and state wide.  “She’s been called a change agent,” Mesmer said.   A recent example cited by Mesmer was Sisson’s quick and decisive leadership organizing school psychology help after the August 23 earthquake significantly damaged public school buildings in Louisa County.

Sisson has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Longwood College.  She received several degrees from James Madison University: a Master of Arts in School Psychology, a second Master of Arts in Community Agency Counseling, as well as a Education Specialist degree in both of these fields.  With 17 years experience, Sisson is in her fourth year in Madison.

“I am so lucky to live and work in a town that has so much support for all of its students and employees.  I've truly found HOME here in Madison,” Sisson noted.

Sisson will now go on to national competition for the nation’s top honor.
