    Dickenson County Public Schools is currently accepting applications for a School Psychologist for the remainder of the 2023-2024 school year and for the 2024-2025 school year.


    The Dickenson County Public School division is located in the beautiful mountains of southwestern Virginia where natural resources are our biggest asset. Our school division serves approximately 1,900 students in 3

    modern, consolidated schools; one comprehensive high school with embedded Career and Technical classes, one middle school, and one newly opened elementary school in the fall of 2023.  Dickenson County Public Schools is a school division that believes in student success and is committed to serving our students and families. 

    Qualifications and Duties:

    • Hold or be eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in school psychology.
    • Completion of an approved program in school psychology to include completion of a post graduate degree and hold a certificate issued by the National School Psychology Certification Board.
    • Considerable knowledge of the concepts, principles, and methodologies of school psychology including psycho-educational evaluations using educational, intelligence, personality, psycho-motor function, behavioral and personality instruments; of child growth and development and of learning, measurement, research, statistics, and intervention and prevention strategies.
    • Knowledge of federal and state regulations and guidelines related to special education and pupil personnel services programs.
    • Experience in psychological and educational assessments in a school setting preferred.

    • Hold or be eligible for a current license in School Psychology issued by the Virginia Board of Psychology in order to maintain and submit records for billing psychological procedures for Medicaid reimbursement.
    • Administer psycho-educational evaluations to students using a variety of instruments tailored to the child’s needs, and be able to demonstrate superior skills in writing psychological reports.
    • Interpret evaluation results and make recommendations at eligibility & IEP meetings
    • Participate as a member of the school team and provide counseling to students with mental healthneeds.
    • Works with the crisis management team in the schools, including reactions to illness, deaths and abuse.

    *Leadership qualities and personal and professional characteristics required to work effectively with students, teachers, support staff, and parents.

    *Other qualifications that the school board may find appropriate.

    The Department of Psychology at James Madison University offers the BS and BA degree in General Psychology, a program of study with a curricular focus on the science of Psychology. Our curriculum offers numerous opportunities for employment in the private and public sector as well as a pathway to professional schools and graduate study in a wide range of programs (e.g., psychological sciences, clinical psychology, social work, counseling, medicine, law, optometry, pharmacy, nursing).     We invite applications for a non-renewable term assistant professor in a 10-month appointment beginning Fall 2023.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    This is a one-year teaching position. Teaching responsibility will include some combination of: courses that meet our sociocultural requirement; Abnormal, Counseling, and/or Clinical Psychology; General Education courses (Introduction to Psychology and/or Lifespan Human Development); methodology courses; and/or upper-level courses in the candidate’s area of expertise/specialty. The area of specialty is open. Successful candidates will be welcome to participate in scholarly activities and service, although these are not expectations of the position.

    Qualifications

    Candidates must have a PhD or PsyD in any area of psychology from an APA-accredited program appropriate to the courses they will be teaching. Teaching experience is preferred.

    Candidates must possess a strong commitment to excellence in teaching. Candidates must also demonstrate an appreciation for the preparation of undergraduate students for employment, graduate education (e.g., counseling, clinical psychology, neuroscience, and other research psychology disciplines) or professional programs (e.g., optometry, physician assistant, occupational therapy, physical therapy).

    Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check.
